Specs
- Origin
- The Scorpion is a mid-century tiki punch created by Victor “Trader Vic” Bergeron at his Trader Vic’s restaurant in Oakland, California. It originated in the 1940s as a large communal bowl drink and was later standardized in both bowl and individual formats in Trader Vic’s Bartender’s Guide (Revised Edition) in 1972. The codified 1972 recipe, featuring light Puerto Rican rum, brandy, citrus juices and orgeat, is treated as the canonical version in modern cocktail literature.History
- The Scorpion began life as a large-format rum punch, reflecting classic punch traditions adapted to theatrical tiki service with shared bowls and long straws. Early Trader Vic versions sometimes included additional spirits and even white wine, but the 1972 guide simplified the formula to rum, brandy, citrus and orgeat. The drink is traditionally blended with shaved ice, then topped with ice cubes afterward—an idiosyncratic Trader Vic technique to preserve both chill and texture. Trader Vic’s original garnish for the Scorpion is a fresh gardenia flower, a dramatic floral touch that became a signature of his tiki presentation.Trivia
