Specs
- Origin
- The Saturn was created in 1967 by Filipino-born bartender J. “Popo” Galsini, working in Southern California tiki bars. It won the International Bartenders Association World Championship that year, showcasing a rare gin-based tiki profile in a rum-dominated genre. The drink later vanished from common use until Jeff “Beachbum” Berry rediscovered the recipe printed on a commemorative glass and republished it in Beachbum Berry Remixed in 2010.History
- The cocktail was reportedly first called the X-15, after the experimental rocket plane, but was renamed Saturn following an X-15 crash in 1967, aligning it with the Saturn rocket program of the space race era. Saturn is unusual among tiki drinks for using gin instead of rum, helping demonstrate that tiki is a style rather than a spirit category. The now-iconic garnish—a cherry ‘planet’ encircled by a ring of citrus peel—visually reinforces the space theme and is widely copied in modern tiki bars. Although it won an IBA competition, Saturn is not an official IBA cocktail and does not appear on the current IBA list.Trivia
